The main cause of deforestation is agriculture (poorly planned infrastructure is emerging as a big threat too) and the main cause of forest degradation is illegal logging. We’re losing 18.7 million acres of forests annually, equivalent to 27 soccer fields every minute.

We are committed to the conservation of Mariolas bees and providing a vibrant habitat for a the countless species of flora and fauna that depend on the refuge for survival.
We invite visitors from around Costa Rica and the world to share this beautiful place in hopes of inspiring them to live more environmentally conscious lives.
Refugio Colmena de las Mariolas welcomes volunteers and donations to achieve our conservation goals. We have several mountain houses where visitors can enjoy the charm and experience of living in the Talamanca mountains, in the midst of the innumerable amount of local and migratory birds.
We offer walks along short trails, quiet spaces in the Heliconia garden, and we have various fruit trees. For the more adventurous guests we offer guided hikes into the Primary and Secondary jungles of the refuge. We share a simple way of life that is in harmony with nature, where peace and tranquility are at the core.

The hostel is equipped to accommodate 25 people. Our serene location is perfect for study-abroad groups, family vacations, and peaceful retreats. We are away from the day-to-day hustle and immersed fully in the beauty of nature.
A large main house, Casa de las Mariposas, offers two spacious bedrooms, a large living room, a terrace perfect for bird watching, a large dining room, and a fully equipped kitchen.
A separate house, Casa de las Frutas, has two floors and space for 8-10 guests. It offers a small apartment with two bedrooms, a private terrace with views overlooking the mountain, a private bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a large dining room ideal for group meals.
Two additional casitas both include private bathrooms, patios, and a shared kitchen and dining room.
